Why are Steroids Illegal?

Why Are Steroids Illegal?

Why are steroids illegal? There is more than one reason that these substances have been banned and outlawed, but the main concern is the physical and emotional damage that these drugs can do. Steroids are synthetic substances which mimic testosterone in the body, which is the male sex hormone. There are some circumstances where these drugs are used for medical purposes, to treat certain medical conditions, and if you have a valid prescription for these drugs then you can possess and use them. Without a valid prescription from a doctor you can be arrested, fined, and jailed for having or using these drugs because they are a controlled substance which is tightly regulated in the United States. The dangers of steroids are numerous, and this is the main reason that the drug was put under strict controls.

Why are steroids illegal without a prescription? Because these drugs are dangerous, and very strong. Steroid abuse is responsible for violent outbursts, often with the user as well as innocent people getting hurt, sometimes fatally. When abused over a period of time steroids can lead to a condition called roid rage, and the abuser becomes violent and short tempered because of the drug use. The physical effects of steroid use occur over both the short term and the long term, and these effects can be devastating or even life threatening. Many athletes and those who try and build muscle have used steroids because these drugs increase the ability of your body to build muscle quickly. The side effects of these drugs are very dangerous, and this is why they were put under strict controls in 1991.

The answer to why are steroids illegal lies in the medical research concerning these drugs. Within a short time of starting these substances you may develop liver tumors, high blood pressure, and jaundice because of a liver failure so that your body and organs can not function normally. For men the testicles will reduce in size, and for both sexes infertility can result from steroid use and abuse. Men may also start to grow breasts, and hair loss is common. Women who use steroids may stop menstruating, and can start to show signs of excessive testosterone such as facial hair and a deeper voice. If steroid occurs during the developing teen years the result may be stunted growth in addition to the other negative effects.

Why are steroids illegal? Because the harm that these drugs can cause far outweigh any possible benefits, except for certain medical conditions. Only a doctor can prescribe these drugs, and then only when there is a medical problem which requires steroids for treatment. Before 1991 many athletes, bodybuilders, and others were using steroids to gain an unfair advantage in competitions and the medical problems and social consequences were astounding. The federal government made steroids illegal without a prescription in 1991, citing health concerns and the many problems associated with these drugs. Most athletic associations and competitions list these substances as banned, and testing is done frequently for all professional and Olympic athletes, as well as many other competitors in other games and competitions.

    Hello,
Concerning the article I read about “why Steroids are illegal”. I find it interesting, what about all the violence, car deaths, bar fights, and illness, etc…that Alcohol causes and yet it’s still legal???. I don’t want to get into details but they should govern Steroids like alcohol. I know about prohibition, basically if society wants something bad enough even if it’s bad then the can have it “alcohol” double standards. “Roid Rage” how many cases of those do we hear yearly in comparison to car related Alcohol deaths? I could go on with stats but it futile. It should be a choice and those suffer the outcome. Thanks for the chance to comment.

THE WAY I SEE IT, YOU SHOULD HAVE THE RIGHT TO DO WHATEVER THE HECK YOU WANT WITH YOUR OWN BODY. THESE STUPID LAWS PREACH DOUBLE STANDARDS THAT ARE IMPOSSIBLE TO IGNORE. ONE MORE THING: IF ROIDS ARE BANNED BECAUSE THEY CAN BE ‘HARMFUL,’ WHY NOT BAN JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING IN THIS ENTIRE WORLD??
