We all know the most popular party snack has always been potato chips. They are crispy, salty, and most satisfying to that snack craving. A handful of chips with an icy soda or cold beer is a favorite for many. Gaining recent popularity in our health conscious society is a tasty and wholesome alternative to the old standard of potato chips. The vegetable chip, a recipe of thinly sliced vegetables deep fried or sometimes baked, is a flavorsome snack as well.

Although vegetable chips were created as far back as the potato chips, they have been getting some recent recognition from those looking for healthy alternatives to the old standards. Obviously, potato chips are made from potatoes. Vegetable chips can be made from a large variety of vegetables. This colorful, appealing snack could be found is local food stores around the world. Recipes for homemade vegetable chips are plentiful as well.

Counting Food CaloriesVegetables can be made into chips with different textures, thickness, and seasonings. As in fruit chips like banana or apple chips, the banana chips tend to have a thicker cut than the thin sliced apple chip. When it comes to the vegetables, which may include carrots, yams, sweet potatoes, cucumber, zucchini, and more, the thickness varies along with the seasonings used for extra flavoring. Some vegetables have skin which may be left on or taken off when converted into crispy chips.

Most of us enjoy dipping our chips. Various dips may include honey mustard, ranch dip, cheese fondue, barbeque sauces, and more. There are endless choices when choosing vegetable chips and the dip to go with them. Vegetable chips bought from the market may come in a variety of vegetables in one bag. However, a bag of carrot chips may be sold separately from a bag of sweet potato chips.

For those counting food calories with a healthy diet on your agenda, pay attention to package labels which will list the fat content. According to the FDA, are both listed under the fat content. Several chip companies make their products with trans fat free oil. This is true for potato and vegetable chips alike. Trans fat free oil is used for many products which is a great benefit for health conscious people who are faithfully counting food calories. If it comes down to choosing a product based on the fat used to make it, , the healthiest party snack would be the vegetable chips either baked or made in trans fat free oil. They may have the same nutrition value as potato chips when baked. However, vegetable chips are a great alternative which will add variety to your snack table.

I’ve been making vegetable and fruit chips like these for years and my kids and all of their friends love them. I use extra virgin olive oil to fry them when I need to whip up a quick batch otherwise baking them is the way to go. It retains the flavor better.
