Valerian extract comes from the root of a valerian plant. This plant is found in North America, Europe, and Asia. For centuries, valerian has been used all over the world for the purposes of calming and relaxing, stomach cramps, and insomnia. There has been worldwide research done on this natural remedy for insomnia and restlessness. Valerian is available as a dietary supplement which comes in a valerian extract power or liquid. It is also available as an herbal tea or in pills. Not only is this herb productive as an , valerian is also known to be effective in stress related nervous conditions. Some conditions of restlessness related to attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, also known as ADHD, and some migraine disorders benefit from valerian extract as well.

As mentioned, one of the most common reasons to use valerian extract is for insomnia. Whether the sleep related problem is relative to falling asleep or awaking during the night, valerian is said to manage either problem with fine results. When taken as a natural sleep aid for insomnia, the recommendations is to take it just before bedtime. If an anxiety problem exists as well, valerian can be taken 3 or more time throughout the day as well as at bedtime. If concerned that valerian will interfere with normal sleep cycles or REM sleep, this should not be a factor. Unlike some prescription and over the counter drugs for insomnia, valerian extract is non-addicting. As a natural remedy for insomnia, valerian may have fairly quick results for folks having trouble getting some shut-eye. However, if the insomnia condition is more severe, the valerian extract may take a few weeks before giving the full effects.

There are few known side effects from valerian like a minor headache or upset stomach. Valerian extract should not be combined with other such medications or antidepressants unless supervised by a physician. Since sleepiness is a result of taking valerian, driving a vehicle should be avoided. In some occasional incidences, people will experience the opposite effect then expected of valerian extract. This may include anxiety and nervousness, restlessness, and even heart palpitations.

As with most herbal remedies, the FDA has not evaluated Valerian for safety or effectiveness. Perhaps all potential risk and benefits are not known. Aside from the FDA, other worldwide studies have been performed with documented results. Valerian users go back enough years to testify to their experience in using this natural remedy for insomnia and anxiety disorders.
