Insomnia Diet

  • Since the food we eat may promote sleeplessness, an insomnia diet may be in beneficial to those suffering from this sleep disorder.
  • When following a diet to treat an insomnia disorder, there are certain foods which should be incorporated into the daily menu and certain foods which should be omitted.

  • In order to avoid addicting prescriptions and over the counter medications for a sleep disorder, a diet with the right foods can give you the same benefits without the side effects of taking pills.

The diets we follow have plenty to do with our health, energy level, and even how we sleep. Since the food we eat may promote sleeplessness, an insomnia diet may be in beneficial to those suffering from this sleep disorder. Some may choose to sip a cup of chamomile tea, a natural remedy for insomnia. Valerian extract is also used by many with benefits of relaxation. Chamomile tea, like valerian extract, may be a natural remedy for insomnia. However, incorporating an insomnia diet into the daily regime will treat the disorder of insomnia.

When following a diet to treat an insomnia disorder, there are certain foods which should be incorporated into the daily menu and certain foods which should be omitted. If sugary foods are regularly consumed, this is one of the items which should be cut down or eliminated. High fats and foods with several preservatives should also be reduced. A well balanced diet which includes fruits, vegetables, and complex carbohydrates should be the daily regime of food. Of course, caffeine should be monitored. If the insomnia is chronic, caffeine should perhaps be eliminated. Pay more attention to food labels. You may not realize the hidden sugars and caffeine in some of the products you eat on a daily basis.

Other foods and drinks to avoid for insomnia besides caffeine products, sugar, and high fats are caffeinated colas, caffeinated teas, spicy foods which may give indigestion, canned foods which are a source of toxicity, alcohol, chocolate and preservatives. If you are prone to allergies, there may be some foods which will pose an allergic reaction. Learn what those foods may be and avoid them altogether. For instance, monosodium glutamate, known as MSG, is a substance which many are allergic to. If this is the case for you, avoid Chinese food or tell them to hold the MSG. Another helpful hint would be to avoid heavy meals in the evening.

Now that several foods which hinder a good sleep have been listed, you can learn of the foods of an insomnia diet which will actually treat the sleep disorder. Chamomile tea and valerian root have already been previously noted. Another old favorite to get a restful night sleep is a cup of warm milk with honey before bedtime. Aside from these bedtime remedies, there are some foods to incorporate into your diet before nighttime even arrives. If possible, eat a larger meal earlier in the day. Make dinner your lighter meal.

Chamomile TeaChlorophyll rich foods as in leafy green vegetables are recommended if steamed or boiled. Whole grains instead of refined carbohydrates are best. This would include whole wheat, brown rice, and oats which are known to have a soothing result on the nervous system as well as the mind. With such carbohydrates, serotonin will be boosted for a better night sleep. Such fruits like lemons or mulberries are known to calm the mind which is another plus for a restful night. There are certain foods which include tryptophan, an amino acid which actually promotes sleep. Some of these foods are turkey, bananas, figs, whole grain crackers, or milk.

In order to avoid addicting prescriptions and over the counter medications for a sleep disorder, a diet with the right foods can give you the same benefits without the side effects of taking pills. You will feel healthier after consuming the right foods which will promote a more restful sleep

    I have had to literally break myself from drinking coffee past a certain point of night because I was suffering such terrible insomnia. Sometimes just a slight change in your routine makes a difference.

    When I first started dieting I noticed that I couldn’t sleep at all and I think stress was getting to me. I started eating some of the foods you mentioned here, like the chamomile tea and stuff and it really helped. I think it has a lot to do with getting yourself relaxed at night.

      What if you insomnia is not being caused by a diet problem? What if it is something else like stress? Should I still try a diet change?
