When people gain weight, or when dropping those stubborn pounds seem to be impossible, metabolism is usually to blame for the weight loss woes. If metabolism is fired up, however, more calories will burn and fat will be replaced with muscle. As a result, the body will be recharged with more energy. In order to better the metabolic boost, a few changes in diet and activity may be needed to get on the road to weight loss.
Exercise is, by far, one of the most important factors in jump-starting the metabolism. When healthy workouts are performed, body fat is reduced while lean muscle mass is increased. Metabolism will power up and facilitate the weight loss procedure when lean muscle mass is increased from healthy workouts. In order to increase the resting metabolic rate, weight lifting, resistance or strength training is recommended. This workout method does not speed up the metabolism. However, fat will be burned and lean muscle will be formed which promotes a resting metabolic rate. The most advantageous workout for boosting metabolism and fat burning is aerobic exercise and resistance training. Morning workouts will promote a metabolism boost that will carry through the entire day. Another way to schedule your workout is to exercise in short intervals of ten or fifteen minutes at a time every few hours. This will keep the metabolic process consistently jolted throughout the day.
If exercise is a problem because of shortened or spastic muscles, muscle energy techniques may be suggested. Muscle energy techniques is an osteopathic method of improving weakened ligaments, strengthening muscles, and improving range of motion. With such a procedure, the body will be better equipped to perform the healthy workouts which will burn fat, build lean muscle, and provide a more efficient metabolism boost. Muscle energy techniques are used by many athletes as well as people with a limited range of motion because of back, shoulder and neck pain, scoliosis, sciatica, unsymmetrical limbs, or chronic muscle stiffness or injury.
Another sure way to fire up the metabolism is by eating a nutritious breakfast. When the body has been deprived of nutrition through the night, a slowdown of metabolism is a result. Throughout the rest of the day, eat at least six small meals. This will keep the body loaded with enough fuel as the metabolism is powered up. Avoid high fat foods. Choose lean protein and vegetables to increase the metabolism. Sugar, alcohol, and caffeine should be limited and dietary fiber should be increased. Foods to increase metabolism are tomatoes, berries and other fruits, fish, dark and green leafy vegetables, whole grains, and plenty of water, eight glasses per day at least. Keep in mind that carbohydrates are converted into glucose, a form of sugar, which is used as fuel by the body. Excess carbs will be turned into stored fat. Fat is also stored as fat. With exercise, those fat stores will burn and metabolism will be increased.
A sluggish metabolism can be jumpstarted with health workouts and proper diet. Healthy benefits of increased energy and desired weight loss will be obtained.

I learned a lot reading this article. Since I’m not really a health nut or exercise nut, I just never thought about the metabolism and how it works. But as I get older I am paying more attention to my weight, and a better understanding of metabolism opens my eyes to some things I should be doing more. I have started a regular exercise routine, nothing fancy. Feeling better already.
