Essential Amino Acids and Nonessential Amino Acids: Facts that Bodybuilders Should Know

Amino acids are responsible for many functions in the body like replenishing tissue, red blood cells, enzymes, and more. For bodybuilders, amino acids are necessary for growth of as well as muscle recovery. They are also important for energy and hormone production, endocrine health, and nervous system functions which involve memory. Amino acids have a wide array of roles in the metabolism process and they are also critical to life.

In total, there are 20 different amino acids which make up all proteins in the body. Nine to twelve of these amino acids are actually produced by the body. These are known as nonessential amino acids. Since the body manufactures these amino acids, they do not need to be acquired from the diet. The other amino acids are called essential amino acids. These are not produced by the body. Therefore, a diet must be the source for the essential amino acids.

Complete proteins include a reasonable set of essential amino acids beneficial for humans. Meat, poultry, eggs, dairy, and fish will supply the essential amino acids. Some plants sources such as buckwheat and quinoa will also provide complete proteins. By consuming plant foods, essential amino acids will be provided and the body will convert the amino acids into proteins.

Failure to obtain an adequate amount of essential amino acids will have significant health repercussions. The result may be dilapidation of the body’s proteins. Protein structures as in the muscles may be dismantled to obtain at least one needed amino acid. The body will store excess fat and starch. However, it does not store a surplus of amino acids for later use.

Essential branched chain amino acids, or BCAA, are crucial for all bodybuilders and athletes. These BCAA are composed of three essential amino acids called L-leucine, L-isoleucine, and L-valine. In sports nutrition, these branched chain amino acids are metabolized in the muscles rather than the liver. According to many, BCAA are of the most effective body building supplements available. They do their jobs of building with painless muscle recovery just as amino acids are expected to do. Protein powder supplements which include branched chain amino acids are readily available to include in a daily workout regime.

Amino acids can be found in pill form or as ingredients in your favorite protein powder supplements. The side effects, if any, are harmless. BCAA comes without any adverse side effects.
